ATO Watch: What Aussie Small Businesses Need to Know Before EOFY 2025

What the ATO Wants You to Have Sorted Before June 30

  1. Business Activity Statement (BAS)
    • Lodge your final BAS for Q4 (April–June) by 28 July 2025
    • Report your GST, PAYG withholding, and income

If you’re GST-registered, this is non-negotiable — even if you didn’t trade much

  2. Superannuation Contributions
    • Ensure super for April–June quarter is paid and received by 30 June
    • This is crucial if you want to claim it as a deduction in this financial year
    • The current rate is 11% of ordinary time earnings

Tip: Super must land in the employee’s fund, not just be processed.

  3. Single Touch Payroll (STP) Finalisation
    • Finalise your STP data by 14 July 2025
    • This replaces traditional payment summaries
    • ATO uses this to pre-fill your employees’ tax returns

If you use MeMate with Xero or MYOB, STP data can sync directly from payroll

  4. Review Deductions & Asset Purchases
    • EOFY is your last chance to claim instant asset write-offs (check current thresholds)
    • Prepay expenses like rent, subscriptions, or insurance if cash flow allows Keep records of all business-related purchases
  5. Reconcile Invoices & Payments
    • Make sure every invoice sent = either paid or written off
    • Chase late payments, close open jobs
    • Cross-check Stripe payouts, bank feeds, and job completion status

MeMate tracks this automatically by linking quote → job → invoice → payment

What’s New or Changing in 2025?

  • Super has increased to 11% (as part of legislated annual increases)
  • ATO is tightening audits on cash-heavy and contractor-heavy industries
  • Real-time BAS lodgement tools are being pushed by major accounting platforms
  • Late lodgement penalties are being enforced more aggressively for sole traders and SMEs
